University College for Interdisciplinary Learning

What is UCIL?

University College for Interdisciplinary Learning allows you to study course units from across the university that contribute to your degree programme. All of our course units are credit-bearing like any other within the university; each one is free and fits in to your timetable. They are taught by the same academic staff who teach discipline-based programmes. For example, all of our language course units are taught by the University’s Language Centre.

UCIL introduces you to issues, topics and new ways of thinking, tackling the key questions facing society in the 21st century. Our course units equip you with invaluable knowledge and skills which will compliment your studies and make you more employable. We provide a unique learning experience by giving you the chance to meet and study with other students from different degree programmes across the university.

The design and assessment of our course units makes them no easier or harder than any other within the university, and take in to account that you may come from a very different degree background. All of our course units are undergraduate level, and we welcome people from all different degree disciplines.

Interested? To enroll, take a look at our course units by theme or by semester.

If you are unsure about your eligibility, contact your programme administrator.

[My UCIL unit] allows me to learn things I would never have otherwise covered in my degree. It gives an important insight into global issues. It teaches valuable information that I will use for the rest of my life. It gives me a chance to work with different kinds of people from all over the University. Undergraduate student
