Course details

"This module was the most valuable one I have done in my whole University course! It helped fire my enthusiasm for working with young people" said one of the students who took this unit in 2012-13.

Leadership of Learning is taught in the Manchester Institute of Education (in the School of Environment, Education and Development). The aim of the unit is to gain knowledge, skills and understanding of many aspects of leadership and working in a professional context.

A central component of the unit is a ten week work placement in a school where you will gain a range of skills by working alongside teachers and pupils. The placement will normally be arranged for three hours on ten successive Wednesday afternoons, although it may be possible to arrange the placement on an alternative day.

Hear about the experience of Egle and Jake who recently completed the unit and placement.

If you wish to be considered for a secondary school placement you will be assigned to the classroom subject that is the closest match to your degree discipline, if available. If there is not a suitable match A level subjects will be considered.

Before your work placement you will undertake 12 hours of preparation including sessions on the social and educational context of teaching and learning, managing relationships and behaviour for learning and leading learning in a socio-culturally diverse setting.

University College course units are available to take on programmes which have 'free choice' options available to them, (i.e programmes which allow you, as part of the degree programme, to take a number of credits from subject areas outside of your home school). As these courses are credit bearing, you therefore must enrol by following the standard procedure for your school when adding units outside of your home school.

If you are not sure whether you will be able to enrol in University College courses, please contact your School Undergraduate Office to find out whether these options are available for your degree programme.
